Examination Organisation
Calculation of Average Grade
The marks for the core, supplementary and specialisation areas of the programme are calculated using a weighted average of relevant modules for that area (example: for an area with 30 ECTS consisting of all numerically graded marks, the weighting for this area would be 30 out of 180 ECTS).
If a module grade consists of multiple exams or assessment formats, the overall mark will be according to the rules set out in the examination regulations. The overall average grade for the programme is a weighted average of the marks from the areas of the programme and the mark for the bachelor’s thesis.
Rules regarding Failed Exams
Students may retake module exams that they have failed. The number of attempts is limited to three per module. It is possible that other rules apply for modules offered by other faculties.
Three additional resit attempts can be granted to students at any point of the programme. Students who have accumulated at least 140 credit points are granted one further attempt. If a student fails an exam in the three additional attempts and the extra attempt for students with 140 points or more, they are deemed to have failed the programme at the final attempt. However, students may only be eligible for additional attempts beyond the initial three attempts if none of the first three exam attempts were failed due to cheating or to an offence. If the candidate fails a module exam three times, they will receive a written notification informing them of the options available. We recommend all students who fail the initial three attempts to seek advice from the WiSo Student Service Point before embarking upon an additional attempt.
Where a module exam consists of several components, the candidate must obtain a “bestanden” (pass) mark, or at least an “ausreichend (4,0)“ (sufficient) mark, in all of the examined components. All components marked “mangelhaft (5,0)” or “nicht bestanden” (fail) must be retaken.
It is not possible to retake module exams that have already been passed.
A failed bachelor’s thesis can be retaken once, with a new topic. Students must register for their second attempt within six months of the result of their first attempt being announced.
Midterm Rules
Some modules have midterm exams. This means that the course runs for half a semester (and therefore, usually offered twice as often). As a result, the semester is split in half. Winter semester midterm courses run until approximately December. Summer semester midterm courses usually end in the middle or at the end of May. It is often the case that exams are offered in the middle of the semester. This option allows students to spread the exam load across the semester.
It is important to take note of the information in KLIPS regarding course dates and exams for modules with midterm rules.
